Program Overview

REGULAR ACADEMIC PROGRAM:

ALTERNATE 1 PROGRAM:

The Alternate 1 Program is located in the WRPS Off-Campus School. This program is designed to support students whose behaviour is interfering with their success in the regular school setting. The goal of the program is to support students in developing the skills and strategies necessary to be successful in the regular school setting. Individualized programs, a supportive environment, counseling and family support are provided. Students are integrated into the regular school setting, as they are ready to do so. Integration is personalized and individualized for each student. Participation in all aspects of school life is encouraged.

ALTERNATE 2 PROGRAM:

The Alternate 2 program is located in the WRPS Off Campus School. This program provides support and programming for students whose difficulty attending school on a regular basis interferes with their success. Students are offered an individualized program, based on the Alberta curriculum. The goal of the program is to help students feel successful, build their confidence with their own learning, complete the coursework for the term, and stay in school.

COMPLEMENTARY COURSES

FINE ARTS:

The fine arts program at Queen E. provides instruction in two main areas: Instrumental Music and Art.

Instrumental Music is offered to grades 7,8, and 9 students. The "band" affords students the opportunity to experiment with a number of instruments to determine their preference. Once an instrument is selected, students progress to a point where they are prepared to participate in a public concert presentation at Christmas. Throughout the year, several opportunities for performance are provided and encouraged. For grade 8 and 9 students, a Band Camp in March offers students the opportunity to participate in music workshops with a variety of notable clinicians.
.

Art Education provides students with the opportunity to explore and pursue their artistic talents with a variety of mediums. Art 9 students have painted several murals throughout the school.

CTS (Career and Technology Studies):

Information Processing teaches a wide range of computer skills. The lab is a PC lab, and MAC computers are used in some of the classrooms and the I. A. lab. Consequently, students have the opportunity to learn both platforms. Keyboarding, word processing, multimedia productions and Internet usage are just some of the areas covered in Information Processing courses. Technology outcomes are integrated throughout the curriculum, seeing students use computer technology for class projects.

Industrial Arts offers several strands in the Fabrication and Design and Construction and Fabrication strands of the CTS curriculum. Modules completed in the lab see students producing wood, plastic and metal projects as well as having the opportunity to learn about digital photography and be involved in developing and producing multimedia projects.

Foods and Fashion modules of the CTS curriculum are offered in the Home Economics Lab. Students have the opportunity to learn about proper nutrition and prepare light snacks to full meals. A variety of sewing projects are completed, from stuffed pillows to spring dresses and pyjama pants. Computerized sewing machines allow students to explore projects involving embroidery and designing their own patterns.

Food Prep in Grade 9 offers nutritious meals to students every second day.  Students in this class take the regular Foods CTS modules plus learn about the food prep industry and cooking methods.  Items are sold through the canteen at the school.
